Four Black Wall Streets

Before there was Silicon Valley. Before there were billion-dollar startups. There were Black Wall Streets. In Richmond, Durham, Atlanta, and Tulsa, formerly enslaved men and women built thriving business districts in the face of segregation, voter suppression, and systemic exclusion. They created banks, insurance empires, newspapers, hospitals, theaters, and self-sustaining economies where the Black dollar circulated dozens of times before leaving the community. Then, in different ways, those ecosystems were dismantled. In Tulsa, they used fire, bullets, and airplanes. In Richmond, they used a highway.
